BORREGO: Through the Eyes of Artist Barbara Nickerson
“My husband and I hike three or four times a week and, when I saw this particular vista I knew I wanted to capture it,” Barbara explained.
The beautiful painting on our 2010 cover is the work of local artist Barbara Nickerson. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Barbara has shown her work internationally, including a solo show in Paris, France. She is a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Women Painters of Washington and Puget Sound Sumi Artists. As those affiliations would indicate, Barbara was, until five years ago, living in the Pacific Northwest. She and her husband were annual visitors to Borrego Springs when en route to Mexico. “Our visits got longer and longer until, finally, we were living here,” Barbara explained.
Barbara’s painting, entitled “Agave & Elephant Knees,” depicts a view she encountered on one of her desert hikes. “My husband and I hike three or four times a week and, when I saw this particular vista I knew I wanted to capture it,” Barbara explained.
Barbara works in watercolor on YUPO, a synthetic paper of 100% polypropylene that allows her to create colorful imagery with more texture than can be accomplished in traditional water color. She hikes with her paper and paints and, in true Plein Air tradition, paints outdoors and finishes her work on location.
Barbara is currently the Executive Director of the Borrego Art Institute. As the winner of our cover art contest, Barbara will receive a $100 cash award and the Orange Book will also make a $100 donation to the Institute. Congratulations, Barbara!
